The hit-and-run crash occurred around 10:37 p.m. Monday on Whalley Avenue in New Haven, according to New Haven Police Officer David Hartman.

Witnesses told police the man’s head went through the windshield, and then the car took off eastbound on Whalley Avenue at a high rate of speed, Hartman said.

When the vehicle reached Fitch Street, the driver turned left, causing the victim, identified as Mark M. Hoffler, of New Haven, to become dislodged and crash to the ground. The driver then fled up Fitch Street, he said.

“The car’s grille was found at the point of impact,” Hartman said. “A check of the part number shows it was for a 2002 Mercury Sable.”

Witnesses told police on the scene that the car had a dull-finished light gray in color paint job, had front-end damage, and a substantial hole in the windshield, Hartman said.

The driver was not described, nor were any possible passengers, he added.

The department's Crash Investigation Unit too over the investigation and located the vehicle Tuesday on Beaver Hill Road. It has been taken to the police garage, where it will undergo a forensic workup, Hartman said.

Anyone who witnessed the crash or who has information about the driver or the vehicle is asked to contact the Traffic Division at 203-946-6316. Calls may be made anonymously.
